Not All Algae Is the Same.
Green Algae — Most Common
The most frequently encountered pool algae in the Houston area. Green algae is free-floating and wall-clinging. It turns water visibly green and is the most responsive to correct treatment. A moderate green algae bloom treated correctly typically clears in 3 to 7 days.
Yellow / Mustard Algae — Resistant
Yellow or mustard-colored algae is a chlorine-resistant strain that tends to accumulate in shaded areas of the pool — corners, steps, behind returns. It is often mistaken for dirt or pollen. Mustard algae requires a specific treatment protocol and is more likely to recur than green algae if the underlying conditions aren’t corrected.
Black Algae — Most Difficult
Black algae is the most persistent and difficult to eliminate. It forms a protective outer layer that shields the organism from chemical attack, and it roots into porous plaster surfaces. Full elimination of black algae requires aggressive physical treatment, sustained chemical saturation, and in some cases, surface resurfacing to remove embedded organisms. Why Green Pool Problems Keep Coming Back
The most common reason a green pool returns within days or weeks of a homeowner-applied treatment: the root cause was not addressed. There are three typical failure points
First, incomplete shock treatment. The amount of chlorine shock needed to treat a severely algae-infested pool is much higher than most homeowners apply. A standard bag of shock in a heavily bloomed pool is a fraction of the required dose. Under-treatment kills surface algae but leaves live organisms throughout the water and embedded in the surface.
Second, filtration failure. Dead algae must be removed from the water by filtration. If the filter is dirty, clogged, or undersized, it recirculates dead matter — which clouds the water, provides nutrients for regrowth, and prevents chlorine from doing its job.
Third, chemistry not fully corrected. Algae establishes under specific chemical conditions: low sanitizer, high pH, low stabilizer, or some combination. If those conditions are not corrected after treatment, algae reestablishes in the same environment it came from.

Whether it recurs depends on the underlying conditions — chemistry management, filtration performance, bather load, and how quickly any future imbalance is corrected. Not usually. A partial drain may be recommended in cases of severe chemical imbalance that cannot be corrected by addition alone, or in extremely severe algae blooms where a fresh start is more efficient than treatment. We will tell you honestly if a drain is the better option for your situation.
No. The pool is not safe for swimming during active algae treatment — chlorine levels during shock treatment are far above swimming range, and the water is actively contaminated until treatment is complete. We will tell you when it is safe to return to the pool.
